Labor Migration in the Gulf


Searching for a brighter future and a better life, millions of laborers migrate every year to other countries leaving their hometowns. "Gulf Arab States" a term used to describe the Arab countries in the Middle East bordering the Arabian Gulf. These countries are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The Gulf States enjoy strong economy and significant incomes from natural oil, which is the primary resource. Some Gulf countries have very low population. Locals enjoy high financial and social status, which leaves a vast amount of jobs unoccupied. Gulf countries depend on expats labor migration to preform different jobs and tasks. Moreover, they fall under the highest ranking of labor migration. The migrants are from different backgrounds and social levels. Every year thousands of laborers from all over the world and specifically Asia migrate to the Gulf coast to search for a better social and financial situation. The last statistic stated that 13 millions of laborers live in the Gulf which is approximately 37% of the total Gulf population. In addition, only in Qatar, the numbers of migrant laborers form 94% of the total amount of laborers. The majority of those workers are from Nepal, India, Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri lanka. Laborers are imparted to work in the Oil and Gas fields, construction fields, cleaning services, security, transportation, and the Industrial fields. As in any case, there have been advantages and disadvantages for this process. However, the goal in this documentary is to highlighting the reasons people take such decisions.
