Northern Tamils remember victims of the final stages of war today with the main event held at the Mullivaikal memorial.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R. Sampanthan and Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran attended the Mullivaikal memorial event.

Sri Lanka on Friday commemorated the eighth anniversary of the end of its decades-long war against Tamil rebels. Around 10,000 fighters surrendered and the entire rebel leadership was killed in the bloody battle
 
Mullivaikkal is located in Mullaitivu District, Vanni, Northern Province Sri Lanka.

Mullivaikkal between January and May 2009 tens of thousands of civilians trapped in the No Fire Zone.

Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day (or simply Mullivaikkal Day; Tamil: முள்ளிவாய்க்கால் நினைவு நாள் Muḷḷivāykkāl Niṉaivu Nāḷ) is a remembrance day observed by Sri Lankan Tamil people to remember those who died in the final stages of the Sri Lankan Civil War. It is held each year on 18 May, the date on which the civil war ended in 2009, and is named after Mullivaikkal, a village on the north-east coast of Sri Lanka which was the scene of the final battle of the civil war.

Tamils across the homeland gathered at the Mullivaikkal memorial today 10 years since the end of the armed conflict to remember the killing of tens of thousands by Sri Lankan armed forces.

'Remember Mullivaikkal' website launched to commemorate massacres

As part of a collaborative project marking the 10th year since the end of the war in Sri Lanka, today the Adayaalam Centre for Policy Research, Tamil Guardian and 47 Roots, launched.

The website aims to provide a resource that maps out the atrocities that took place during the final months of the armed conflict and reflects on their impact 10 years later.

It's been ten years since the end of a brutal civil war in Sri Lanka. The end came in Mullivaikkal, near Jaffna, and it was there that thousands of civilians became trapped between an advancing Sri Lankan army and the separatist rebels. Some 146,000 people remain unaccounted for and are presumed dead. Tamils gathered in Mullivaikkal to remember those who died.
