[h=3]VoA station in Sri Lanka[/h]this is the Voice of America relay station in Marawila in Chilaw.station was set up in the early 1980s after much contraversy during the J.R Jayawardhana regime. India from the begenning (still do) was against the move to set up the station in Sri Lanka,with the fear that it may be a survailance post for US Government ,especialy with its close proximity to India.
the station consits of number of buildings , of varid sizes and consists 14 , +20m anntennas.there is a clearly marked perimeter fence and assorted structures.

* US to close Voice of America station in Sri Lanka and hand over land to government

Jan 19, Colombo: The United States Embassy in Colombo has informed the Sri Lankan government that U.S. has decided to close the Voice of America broadcasting facility at Iranawila in Puttalam and hand over the land back to the Sri Lanka before its lease expires.
Sri Lanka leased the land spanning an extent of 166.038 hectares in Iranawila to the United States Embassy in1991 to establish the Voice of America transmission station in Sri Lanka.
The US Embassy had been paying an annual lease of US$ 40,000 for the land to the General Treasury since being granted the land in 1991. The lease on the land was scheduled to expire in 2020.
The Embassy last month has informed the government that they would close down the station and return the land and also hand over the other assets and properties in the premises.
Accordingly, the cabinet of ministers has approved a proposal put forward by the Prime Minister Rani Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs, to void the relevant lease agreement and take over the land and other assets.
The government intends to develop the site as an eco-friendly investment/tourism zone and will call for proposals from interested investors, an official source said.
State media reported that the U.S. Embassy will also hand over items such as buildings, vehicles, radio equipment, furniture, to the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), Army, and Sri Lanka Telecom.
