The mural depicts a fearsome dragon-like creature emerging from what appears like the US flag moving to devour Sri Lanka.

Opposition to the MCC agreement was a major plank in the SLPP’s Presidential Election campaign platform with leaders like Wimal Weerawansha, Udaya Gammanpila and even the GMOA’s Dr Anuruddha Padeniya saying that the deal would mean a division of the country forcing people from the South to get visas from the Americans to go on pilgrimage to Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.

This sentiment would have swung many a vote in the Deep South to elect President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Muralism in Sri Lanka

RepublicNext Sri Lanka, 18 Dec 2019

Across many parts of Sri Lanka, young men and women are taking to the walls to paint murals. The trend, started by supporters of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna supporters immediately after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was elected, initially sported mostly “patriotic” scenes of heroic soldiers, Sri Lankan flags and King Dutugemunu defeating Elara. But now the trend has spread to other folks who have chosen to decorate the walls with religious scenes, scenery and environmental themes.
