Statistics obtained from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) show that between 2011 and 2021, out of 2,822 deaths of Sri Lankans reported in 40 countries, 233 were suicides.
There are a total 40 countries where SLBFE-registered migrant workers have been employed in the last 10 years.
These statistics of the registered migrant workers show that the highest number of suicides had occurred in Saudi Arabia and it stands at 99 during the same period.
The highest number of suicides in Riyadh was 88 and Jeddah 11 in Saudi Arabia, followed by Kuwait, 29.
Also, there had been 28 suicide cases reported in Qatar and 25 in Dubai during the same period.
In the meantime, Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that in the last five years, between 2016-2021, 237 dead bodies of Sri Lankan migrant workers from Doha Qatar were repatriated to Sri Lanka. In 2016, there were 42 bodies, in 2017, 34 bodies, in 2018, 44 bodies, in 2019, 54 bodies, in 2020, 49 bodies and in 2021 there were 14 bodies repatriated from Doha.
