Cajun On Wheels
4 Bullers Lane, Colombo 7

Reviewed by indi
Cajun On Wheels is a Singaporean chain that serves good seafood (and burgers). They have some (shared) options that cost over Rs. 12,000, which can be intimidating, but you can have a good feed here for less than Rs. 1,200 as well.
[h=2]The Food[/h]The basic model here is fried (or steamed) seafood. So how's the seafood?
It's good. This is a close-up of the Mixed Seafood Ocean Box (Rs. 950). The Ocean Box range is the most affordable thing here, and it's a good value. This comes with prawn, white fish (snapper I think), clams, mussels, corn on the cob and sweet potato fries.
Oh, and a sauce, can't forget the sauce. We got the cheesy herb and butter but they have a range.
The seafood itself tastes fresh and it's well and quite simply cooked (in this case mostly steamed). It actually has very little seasoning at all, so you need the sauce for flavor. The sauce is quite warm and savory without being overly salted.
The Ocean Box is a satisfying deal and a good portion of Food.

The Fat Crab
53 Haig Road, Colombo 4

Reviewed by Vishvi
The Fat Crab is one of the few crab-centric restaurants in Colombo. It's been over three years since our last visit to this place, and our experience this time was every bit as good as the last one.
The Crab

Aside from crab, almost everything in their menu is seafood-based and the rest of the dishes are comprised of different meats like lamb, chicken, and beef, and also a few vegetarian options.

One does not simply walk into The Fat Crab to have anything other than crab, which is why we decided to opt for two of their most popular crab dishes - Spicy Negombo Devilled Crab (Rs. 3600) and Garlic Butter Crab (Rs. 3600).
If you haven't already been to The Fat Crab, ordering a crab-based meal here involves two steps.

Dindigul Thalappakatti Restaurant
No 9, De Fonseka Pl, Colombo 05

Reviewed by Vishvi

When Nagasamy Naidu established Anandha Vilas Biriyani Hotel in 1957 at the town of Dindigul, he wouldn't have expect that the turban on his head would be subjected to an itigation at the Madras High Court. As a huge fan and a believer of Chinnaswami Subramania Bharati, the famous Tamil poet and freedom fighter, Naidu used to wear a turban (thalappakatti in Tamil), which led his customers to refer his restaurant as Thalappakatti’s Hotel. This name stuck with the crowd - therefore, after his demise in 1978, it was renamed to Thalappakatti Anandha Vilas Biriyani Hotel.
...
Food & Drinks

Dindigul is a city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, with a unique cooking style - so what you get here probably won't resemble your usual Indian food. They present a distinct set of flavors that tickles your taste buds in a different way. It's said that most of the recipes they follow here are created by Naidu's beloved wife.
We started our investigation with a portion of Paneer 65 (Rs. 450). They offer their food on aluminium plates/pots, and you can enjoy them on massive trays of the same kind, that are topped with banana leaves.

Thai Heritage Food Truck
383 Colombo - Horana Rd, Colombo 05

Parked down Havelock Road, Thai Heritage Food Truck is a place that you can grab some good Thai fare sitting under the shade.
...
Food

We dropped in around 2.55 pm, which is almost the time they're done with their lunch servings - but one look at our hungry faces, they were kind enough to make a last call.
For our starters, we ordered a portion of their Fried Chicken Wings, the chicken spring rolls weren't available. Clocking in at Rs. 550, you get three meaty chicken wings here, all wrapped in an extremely thin layer of well-seasoned batter and deep-fried to perfection. The meat was tender and easily fell off the bone. However, the sauce on the side was the real winner. It had the proper balance between sweet and sour elements and a subtle spiciness, which enhanced the overall flavor of the wings.

YAMU's Favourite Crab Dishes in CMB

A list of 7 of the best crab dishes in CMB as reported by yours truly.

Posted by senuri vidanapathirana

Sri Lanka's reputation for producing the finest crabs in South/South East coastline is seriously brag-worthy. Our lagoons play home to fleshy crabs, and the better part of that is being sent off to the kitchens of our neighbours - Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Dubai.
For some reason, crab-centric restaurants are hard to come across in Colombo. However, there are a few places around here that you can get your crab fix.
Upscale or streetside, here's our rendition of the best servings of our favourite crustacean in the city.
Singapore Chilli Crab - Fat Panda

Fat Panda's Singapore Chilli Crab is a massive, fiery concoction of crispy sweet-chilli batter, succulent medium shell crab, and chunks of flavour-soaked fresh crab meat. This is one of the spiciest crab curries we've encountered. At Rs. 1650, it's a brilliant treat!

The Catch Colombo
1096 Talangama South, Battaramulla

A restaurant in Battaramulla serving some of the best Fried Fish dinners in the City.

Reviewed by Senuri V
According to my parents, Battaramulla used to be a dodge central around 2 decades ago. Don't ask me why we moved there.
Nonetheless, we've come a long way since then. Government offices, a giant Arpico, most of the population, a whole bunch of places to get food from and other such baloney reside there now. Yes, we glowed up good.

...

Food

The ordering procedure is pretty simple. You choose how much fish you want (250g or 400g) and then the sauce you want it accompanied with (Tamarind, Kochchi or Lemon Butter) and then you choose the carb (roast paan with parippu and pol sambola, egg fried rice, steamed rice).
We went with the 400g fish with Lemon Butter and roast Paan (Rs. 1500) and the 250g fish with Kochchi and Egg Fried Rice (Rs. 900).
This is the fish with Lemon Butter. Crispy on the outside, beautifully cooked from the inside, it was superb! While the fish itself seemed to have been marinated with a bit of spice, the lemon butter sauce rang hard and clear.

Utterly buttery and tangy in every right way, we loved, loved, LOVED it.

Nom Nom Asia

Specialising in most things Asian, Nom Nom Asia is resto down Maya Avenue. It's another venture by Heritage Hotel - Anuradhapura, and a sister restaurant to Thai Heritage Food Truck.
[h=2]Ambience[/h]Dripping with plastic vines and flowers, the dining area at Nom Nom Asia had slight hints of the Mediterranean mixed with a touch of a swamp, all combined by the impeccably clean, gorgeous tones of their seating.
They have a capacity to seat more than two dozen people without batting an eyelash and also the option of dining outside. With Classical Thai music playing in the background and air conditioning to save you from the heat, we had nothing to complain about.
[h=2]Food[/h]The food menu at Nom Nom Asia was big. Spanning from options like rice to noodles to soup to spring rolls with the option of going with chicken, seafood beef and even crab. We decided to go with the Vegetable Fried Rice as per staff recommendation (Rs. 850), Fried Tofu in Mushroom (Rs. 750) and the Lime and Honey Chicken (Rs. 895).

Saveira Indian Restaurant
185, 5 Havelock Rd, Colombo 5

Reviewed by Senuri V

Found in the heart of Havelock Town, Saveira Indian Restaurant joined the eatery scene in Colombo as the rather giant-sized new kid on the block not too long ago, and from what we gathered from our visit, they cater to all of us broke souls looking for decent Indian food to get us through the day.
Ambience

If you've ever passed the Royal Institute at Havelock Town, you cannot miss this giant building.

Saveira has the capacity to serve at least 50- 100 people without batting an eyelash. With tables and chairs covering almost every inch of the space, the hall was air-conditioned and basically a very safe bet when it comes to dining because no matter how many people are already there, chances are that they'll be able to sneak you in somewhere.

The Food

Like in most cases, Saveira as an Indian restaurant in Colombo, has a menu the size of the dictionary. Everything from rice to soup to biriyani to roti, they have a lot to offer so make sure you know what you're craving before you go, or you're bound to get stuck.

Kicking things off with some Cheese Naan was probably one of the best decisions we made this entire week. Clocking in at a pretty decent Rs. 180, the naan that had a thin layer of melted cheese in the middle was utterly beautiful. Fluffy as hell and pillowy soft, the naan was thick in the best way and combined with the burnt charcoal bits, it was a treat.

Oriental Gourmet (One Galle Face)
L6, One Galle Face, 1A, 02 Centre Rd, Colombo

Reviewed by Vishvi

It's a known fact that one of the best ways to bond with people is over a delicious meal, and what better way to do that than sharing a hotpot, don't you agree? Oriental Gourmet is one such restaurant that is solely focused on providing that experience to their customers, by serving up some of the best, giant bowls of simmering hotpots we've had to date.

Located on the 6th level of One Galle Face building, they're unbelievably friendly on the wallet too.
[h=2]The Hotpots[/h]You can either settle for a pre-customised hotpot (Set Meals), or you can customise one on your own too. If you're going for the latter, you get to pick the broth (they've got around 10 kinds of them) and veggies and meats you want with it, and the price point will be calculated according to the elements and broth you choose.

Majority of the broths are priced under Rs. 500 (for small), but they also have super expensive ones too, which cloaks in at Rs. 2280. As for veggies, it starts at Rs. 250 and goes up to Rs. 580, while the pricing of meats varies from Rs. 580 to Rs. 1980. Altogether, they've got around 65 varieties of meats and veggies and also a few dishes to enjoy on the side.

Seed Cafe
60 Horton Pl, Colombo 7

Reviewed by Senuri V

Colombo doesn't necessarily have many vegan-friendly restaurants, at least, not ones where you can go to without feeling your wallet dip considerably. This is where Seed Cafe comes into view.
Done as the love child between the likes of The Grind and Ceylon Superfoods Company, Seed Cafe joined the cafe scene in Colombo not too long ago in the same place Cafe Kumbuk used to be.

Ambience
With gentle pastel tones taking over the air, the ambience at Seed Cafe was lovely.

Looking like a cafe straight out of a Geneva Vanderzeil's Pinterest board, the cafe was as pretty as a picture and fit the bill to a tee. With plenty of sunlight seeping through, space is perfect for when you're looking for a fancy brunch or even just to get a cup of coffee and get some work done.
That being said though, the staff is super nice to large groups, just as long as you don't drive out any of the other people at the restaurant.

The Food
The food at Seed Cafe at the moment mainly comprises of mostly a couple of mains, smoothies, coffee and a few other options that are mostly of the liquid variety.
This is the Pesto Chicken Bagel Burger (Rs. 950). Served with a side of baked potatoes, the bagel was brilliant. Essentially comprising of an assembly of abalone mushrooms, pesto, avocado, grilled chicken cheddar, onion jam and veggies, this was worth everything you spend on it and is all in all, pretty great.

Ban Thai Seafood Restaurant
31/5 Sea Ave, Colombo 3

Reviewed by Senuri V

Found along the coast of marine drive, Ban Thai Seafood Restaurant hasn't been around too long. In fact, they only opened up about a month ago and somehow fit themselves into the restaurant scene without much effort. With a bunch of good reviews on their social media platforms and some pretty stellar looking dishes, we decided to leave it all aside and give them a shot.
[h=2]Ambience[/h]Ban Thai Seafood is on Marine Drive and is also connected to the Ban Thai Spa that also happens to be the other half of the building. It seems slightly dodgy at first considering how we were literally directed to a flight of stairs leading to a Thai Spa, but the restaurant is on the first floor.

So, while it may be a tad intimidating at first, all fear pretty much leaves when you go into the restaurant.
With plenty of seating to seat at least 30 people without any effort, the ambience at Ban Thai Seafood Restaurant essentially comprised of air conditioning, comfy seats, a dimmed out sea view and plenty of brown/ golden-hued walls to tie it all together. All in all, we liked it. It was clean, comfy and we couldn't find anything to complain about this one.
[h=2]The Food[/h]Ban Thai may be a seafood restaurant, and while they do have a whole heap of seafood-based dishes, they also have meats along the lines of pork and chicken to satiate those of you who can't handle just seafood.
Take the Tom Yum Soup (Rs. 900) for instance. They have at least a dozen soup options and even the chicken version of the Tom Yum if you're interested. Thankfully, we decided to go with the seafood, and boy are we glad we went with this.
A portion big enough for 2, the Tom Yum Soup was brilliant. Hands down, one of the best Tom Yum's we've had in a while.
