Eco Retreats "Back of Beyond" (diverse Locations)

Backof Beyond Pidurangala (6rooms - capacity 16) is located in a forest, 5 minutes from Sigiriya. Bird watching, walking, cycling, hiking, picnics and wewa (tank) baths are popular at Pidurangala. As the property borders an elephant path, elephant sightings are possible, especially during the dry season. Excursions to the Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Wawe wildlife parks, Sigiriya, Pidurangala, Dambulla, Ritigala, Polonnaruwa archeological sites could be arranged.

Back of Beyond Dehigahaela (6 rooms - capacity 18) is a 8 acre property which borders two streams and is surrounded by forests, is around 25 minutes from Sigiriya. Some of the activities are Bird watching, nature walks, stream baths, up-stream hiking and cycling. Excursions to Sigiriya, Pidurangala, Nuwaragala, Kaludiya Pokuna, Dambulla and Menikdena, Wildlife parks of Minneriya, Kaudulla, Hurulu Wawe could be arranged.

Back of Kahandamodara (9 rooms - capacity 25) is around 20 minutes from Tangalle. This is a 14 acre property which borders a lagoon, and is just a 5 minute walk from the beach. There is a swimming pool overlooking the lagoon and a large hall and dining space that can be used activities. Activities at this site are Bird watching, lagoon baths, fishing and boating/kayaking, beach walks and cycling. Excursions to the nature reservations of Kalametiya, Rekawa, and Ussangoda, Wildlife Parks of Bundala and frther down to Yala can be organized.

Back of Beyond Safari Lodge, Yala (1 rooms - capacity 5) is located around 15 minutes from the Yala National Park entrance. Another room with a capacity for 7 will be added by July. In spite of being famous for having the greatest concentration of leopards in the world, Yala is much more than for leopard watching. Herds of elephants, lone tuskers, sloth bear, wild buffaloes, deer, sambhur, crocodiles, innumerable birds, butterflies, trees, landscapes…

Waters Edge Tissawewa (3 rooms - capacity 8) in Anuradhapura overlooks the Tissawewa and the magnificent stupas. Walking distance to the TissaWeva, one of the great irrigation lakes of the ancient city. The walk along the bund at dawn or dusk with the Stupas across the water, birds and village life around, is a treat in itself.

Hallo Joerg,

ich hab natürlich gleich auf der HP geschmökert. Die Unterkünfte sind sehr schön und haben einen ausgefallenen Stil, der mir sehr gefällt. Chilaw und die beiden Anlagen nahe Sigiriya sind, zumindest nachdem was ich auf den Bildern sehen kann, meine Favoriten.

A little Note of Back of Beyond

We opened our first Back of Beyond eco-lodge at Pidurangala to guests in 2007. Today, our Back of Beyond properties have gradually increased to five. In addition, we have undertaken to manage another three bungalows which were built as personal holiday homes. We are glad to welcome like-minded friends and guests to these eight lodges and bungalows.

The Sigiriya rock is probably the best landmark for our two Back of Beyond retreats in Pidurangala and Dehigaha ela. Back of Beyond Pidurangala hides in the forest at the base of Pidurangala rock, a mere 5 minutes from Sigiriya. Back of Beyond Dehigaha Ela on the other hand is an unique open grassland ringed in by streams, trees and hills down a maze of red earth village roads. Moving up to Anuradhapura, on the banks of Tissawewa is the serene Water’s Edge Bungalow, looking out to the ancient city.

Only a couple of hours drive from Colombo is the beautiful colonial bungalow - Diklande Estate located on a hundred acre coconut estate. The recently renovated holiday home boasts a swimming pool as well the trademark 'open to the sky' bathrooms.

Deep down on the south coast, between Tangalle and Hambantota, is a little village on the estuary – Kahandamodara. Back of Beyond, Kahadamodara is on the banks of the Urubokka Oya river, just as it makes its way to the sea. Moving further along the coast, just 15 minutes from the entrance to the Yala National Park, are our little Back of Beyond Safari Lodge cottages And Our Sand Dunes Campsite.
