Human Rights Watch calls for an international justice mechanism in Sri Lanka after President pardons convicted soldier

Mar 28, Colombo: An International justice mechanism is needed in Sri Lanka to deliver justice for victims of the armed conflict and to deter future atrocities, the Human Rights Watch said after Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa pardoned soldier convicted of massacring eight civilians this week.Issuing a statement Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Friday that Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s pardon of a soldier convicted of massacring eight civilians, including children, shows the administration’s disregard for justice for the worst abuses,.“The conviction of former Sgt. Sunil Ratnayake had been one of the very few cases of security force personnel being criminally punished for civil war-era atrocities, despite the huge number of credible and extremely serious allegations,” the HRW said.

Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission expresses deep concern over presidential pardon to Sunil Ratnayake

Apr 02, Colombo: The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa expressing its deep concern over the presidential pardon to former Army Corporal Sunil Ratnayake, who was convicted of killing eight civilians including three children. The HRCSL in its letter to the President said the granting of a presidential pardon to a person convicted of such a heinous offence and whose conviction was upheld unanimously by the Supreme Court sends a negative message that reinforces allegations of impunity and lack of justice for victims of violations in Sri Lanka.
