9 years after disappearance of Fr. Jim Brown & Mr. Vimalathas

9 years ago, on 20th August 2006, Fr. Jim Brown and Mr. Vimalathas disappeared after having been last seen at a Navy checkpoint in Allaipiddy, Jaffna[1]. Few days before, Fr. Jim Brown had been threatened by a Navy officer. There had also been tension between him and the Navy, as the Catholic Priest had pleaded with the Navy to allow injured civilians leave Allaipiddy, during the fighting between the government military and the LTTE. Earlier on, many civilians were killed and injured on an attack on the Allapiddy Church, to which Fr. Jim Brown had welcomed desperate civilians seeking a place of refuge from the fighting.

Christ Church Jaffna Revived: A Long-Delayed Restoration From The Ravages Of War

Recall the period from late 1985 to mid-1987 in Jaffna. The Sri Lankan army was holed up in Jaffna Fort and most areas were under militant groups of various sorts. At the beginning of this period when the Sri Lankan Army, SLA, attacked an LTTE camp near Chullipuram bringing men in by helicopter, other groups came to their defence. The SLA withdrew. At the end of the period, the LTTE having consolidated its “only representative of the Tamil people” status and massacred the other groups, the SLA felt the time was ripe to dislodge the LTTE from all areas it controlled. The degree of confidence varied with commanders. Kobbekaduwa was optimistic. Ranatunga was cautious.

Christ Church is the only place in Jaffna where Tamils and Sinhalese can worship together. It has to succeed.

SRI LANKA: War-damaged Jaffna church becomes peace center

The buildings of Christ Church along Jaffna's main road stand pock-marked by shell holes, as a grim reminder of the many pitched battles fought between Tamil rebels and Sri Lankan forces in this Tamil heartland on the northern fringe of Sri Lanka.

"We're converting this church into a war memorial, and it will be used as a center for conflict analysis," the Rev. S. P. Nesakumar, the archdeacon of Jaffna, told Ecumenical News International as he pointed to the severe damage inflicted by bombing and shelling during the 1990 and 1995 conflicts.

The Jaffna peninsula has nearly 30,000 war-damaged buildings, which residents say is a grim testament to the bloodshed in the Tamil heartland, where nearly 40,000 government security troops are deployed to uphold Sri Lankan sovereignty among about half a million Tamils.

During 1988, when the church was packed with refugees of all faiths, a giant shell landed on the building but did not explode.

"Struck by the miracle, the people themselves put up the statue," says Nesakumar, who explains that it stands near to where the shell landed. Since then, Christians of all denominations have come to pray at the church, and bring flowers and garlands to lay at the feet of the statue.

This documentary entitled “Puṅgudutīvu: A Disintegrating Island” is based on an anthropological field research study undertaken in Puṅgudutīvu by Thanges Paramsothy, a PhD research student from University of East London, United Kingdom. This documentary brings to the forefront the land-related issues, which the people of Puṅgudutīvu currently face consequent to the internal and external displacements brought about in the wake of the armed conflict that lasted three decades.

The efforts of the patriotic Tamils living abroad as well as the passionate Tamils still living on the island, who are rebuilding and renovating their communal temples as a means of brining together their brethren and kith and kin who are scattered all over the world, have been documented herein. This also brings into focus some problematic issues routinely encountered by the inhabitants in relation to their residence, water problems, agriculture, safety and security, castism, religion etc.

Auch bei / in kleinen Tempeln kann man interessantes entdecken. Genau danach suche ich immer. Nur sehr selten werde ich enttäuscht.

Vairavar (Bhairava) Tempel gibt es in der Umgebung von Jaffna viele. Meistens sieht man aber nur Bhairava mit Hund. Der in #95 und #96 vorgestellt Tempel ist da einer der wenigen Ausnahmen.
