Jan 03, Colombo: The proposal made by Minister of Finance and Mas Media, Mangala Samaraweera to obtain the support of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the construction of a light rail system in the Colombo city has received the Cabinet approval.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency has agreed to provide financial and technical assistance to establish a Light Rail Transit (LRT) System in Colombo in order to minimize the heavy traffic congestion existing in Colombo and its suburbs.

President orders to immediately suspend the Colombo light rail project

Sept 24, Colombo:
Secretary to the President Dr. PB Jayasundara has instructed the Ministry of Transport to suspend the proposed Colombo light rail project immediately.

The Secretary to the President has sent a letter to the Secretary to the Ministry of Transport NB Monty Ranatunga on the 21st requesting him to stop the $ 2.2 billion Light Railway Track (LRT) project immediately and close its project office.
