Large-scale felling of trees in Wanathawilluwa

Large-scale felling of trees in over 100 acres of land belonging to the Forest Department in the Eluwankulama Mangalapura Grama Niladhari Division in the Wanathawilluwa Divisional Secretariat Division has been reported.

A few years ago, this land was leased to the Ceylon Cement Corporation by the Forest Department and leased to another private company.
More than a thousand large trees were cut down and the trees were set on fire.
Among the felled trees are a number of valuable trees, including palu, weera, madang and teak. Environmental groups say some of the trees that were cut down and set on fire are 400-500 years old, exceeding 7-8 feet in circumference.
Environmental organisations, officials of the Cement Corporation and officials of the Forest Department visited the site yesterday (06) afternoon and all spoke in condemnation of the devastation.
