LG Polls will not be held on March 9 - Elections Commission​

The Elections Commission today formally announced that the Local Government Elections will not be held on March 9 and a fresh date will be announced on March 3.

The decision was taken during a meeting by the members of the Election Commission today.

In a statement, the Elections Commission said that the Commissioner General had decided to send a request to the Speaker of Parliament to intervene in obtaining the funds necessary for the Local Government election from the Treasury once a fresh date is announced.

The Commissioner General of Election Saman Sri Ratnayake said a report containing information on the work done constitutionally by the Election Commission in connection with the local government election which was to be held on March 9 will also be submitted to the Speaker.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Local Government elections may get postponed again​

Mar 12, Colombo: Although the Election Commission has decided to hold the postponed local government (LG) election on the 25th of April, the election may be postponed further, political sources say.

The Election Commission says that if an amount of 100 million rupees is not received within the next week, it will not be possible to hold the local government polls on April 25.
Election Commission chairman Nimal G. Punchihewa has told Neth News that at least that amount is needed to carry out the basic activities related to the election.
The total amount requested by the Election Commission for the local government elections is 1,100 million rupees.

Apr 11, Colombo: The Local Government Election which was scheduled for the 25th of April has been postponed for a second time, the Election Commission announced following a special meeting today.

Issuing a statement, Commissioner-General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said while the Electoral Commission worked to hold the Local Government Elections as scheduled in the midst of various difficulties, due to the lack of financial allocations required for the polls and reasons beyond the control of the Commission, the election scheduled for 25 April 2023 has also been postponed.
