Military-occupied land will ‘never’ be returned states Sri Lankan minister

11. September 2020

Sri Lanka’s State Minister Sarath Weerasekara told parliament that military-occupied land in the North-East will “never” be given back to the people, blaming Tamil politicians with “separatist agendas” as the reason for continued military control of these areas.

The Sri Lankan minister also responded to reports that Sinhala Buddhist monks have been facilitating land grabs in the North-East under the guise of archaeology by claiming, “Buddhist monks are not vestiges of invaders”.

“They are part of this society and have all the right to protect our Sinhala Buddhist heritage,” he added.

More militarisation as Sri Lankan army looks to expand involvement in agriculture in North

03 September 2020

Jaffna District Army Commander, Major General Senarath Bandara, recently told media representatives, that the army are ready to cooperate within the Northern province for agriculture, Virakesari reported.

This is the latest example of the Sri Lankan military's approach to embed and normalise the process of militarisation, despite the armed conflict ending over a decade ago. The North and East remains heavily militarised with military involvement encroaching on all aspects of civilian life.

Mullaitivu court allows Sri Lankan Archaeology department to construct sentry point

12 September 2020

The Mullaitivu Magistrate Court has granted permission for the construction of a sentry point at the Kurundhur mountain, but ordered that no religious sites can be built in the area as tensions continue between Sri Lanka’s archaeology department and local Tamils.
