Hosts MIC win India Independence Day match in Munich

Publiziert am 17. August 2014 von André Leslie
In its nearly 15 years of existence the annual India Independence Day cricket match in Munich’s Englischer Garten has become somewhat of an icon. And, over the years, it’s somehow always managed to stay rain-free.
And so it was this year as well, as a Munich International Cricket team triumphed against an Invitational XI on Friday 15th August.
Earlier in the day the clouds had looked threatening but Rajendra Nath and his organising team managed to persist to get the Flicx pitch down. The game was ready to start on time.
Before the first ball was bowled the Indian Consul General Mr M. Sevala Naik greeted both teams. The avid cricket fan also faced an over in the middle before the serious stuff began, much to the delight of the gathered crowd.
Batting first, the MIC side scored 7/150, assisted by a strong innings of 62 (retired) by Roushan Singh. In response, the Invitational XI started poorly with a series of run-outs before Shahil Momin was able to increase the run rate with some nice shots. Despite valiant efforts at the close from captain Yashivan Govender and Maximilian Höck, the guests fell well short ending on just 122.
Speaking after the game, winning MIC captain Kashif Hussain thanked Ramesh Korya, Rajendra Nath and Dr. Sanjeev Chowdhury for organising the day, as well as sponsors Novalnet and Restaurant Swagat. He also praised the spirit of the players on the field.
“An event like this shows people around Germany what cricket in Bayern is capable of,” Hussain said.
