The Mullaitivu Court has permitted the commemoration of those who were killed in Mullivaikkal in the Mullaitivu District during the last phase of the civil war in Sri Lanka.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian Selvam Adaikalanathan told Colombo Gazette that earlier several Police stations in the Mullaitivu District had obtained a court order preventing the commemoration.

He said, however, the Court issued a new order today permitting the commemoration of those killed in Mullivaikkal, to be held tomorrow (18).

Tamil human rights defender Arul Raj says distrust remains among Sri Lanka’s ethnic groups 12 years after the civil war ended.

Raj, an activist from Killinochchi, the former administrative city of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), remembers the relatives and priests who went missing or were killed during the war when he passes some areas.

Tamils have called on the government to build trust among minorities as they struggle to commemorate their loved ones.

12 Years of Seeking Hope After Three Decades of War

May 18, 2021 marks 12 years since the end of the war.

It must be an occasion for us as Sri Lankans to assess progress we have made in addressing root causes for the conflict through a political process and moving forward towards co-existence and more peaceful and just society. It’s also an occasion for us to assess how we have dealt with consequences of the conflict, such as searching for the disappeared, release of political prisoners, resolving land issues, ensuring economic justice and accountability for serious crimes committed. Civilians from all ethnic groups and combatants from all sides have been struggling to deal with these issues as well as mental trauma, physical disabilities and gender-based violence and discrimination.

But the focus on May 18 has often been reduced to the emotional and politically charged remembrances. For many Sinhalese, the numerical ethnic majority in the country, it’s a day of celebration – of a war victory, of war heroes and the military defeat of the LTTE. For many Tamils in North and East, a numerical minority ethnic group, it’s a day of grieving, to remember the large numbers killed during three decades of war and the immense suffering they had undergone, especially during the last stages of the war in 2009 and afterwards. These differences have been made worse by successive governments promoting and supporting war victory celebrations in Colombo and obstructing, intimidating, threatening and prohibiting collective grieving by Tamils in the North and East. This year, media reports indicate the government would hold “Victory Day” celebrations on May 19 through religious observances due to the escalating COVID-19 pandemic.
