Jaffna University Students Union warns return to war if EU retains the ban on travel for LTTE
[ LTTE Peace Secretariat ] [ 01:47 GMT, Oct. 3, 2005 ]

The decision of the EU has shocked the Tamil people. The Sri Lankan government has been trying hard to stop the truth about, the struggle of the Tamil people and the enormity of the government's human rights violations reaching the international community. It enacted laws and placed restrictions on our ability to inform the international community. As a result, international community, unable to fully appraise the situation, has in the past banned our sole representatives the LTTE as terrorists. It is to overcome this and to inform the international community about our just struggle and to show them that LTTE is our sole representatives that we the University community launched the first Pongu Thamil event in 2001.

Hakeem: Kalmunai favours Ranil

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader says the party will almost certainly support leader of the opposition Ranil Wickramasinghe in the forthcoming presidential elections.
Speaking to BBC Sandeshaya while attending a SLMC Ampara district Central Committee meeting in Kalmunai, Rauff Hakeem said the regional leaders are strongly in favour of supporting the former premier, Wickramasinghe.

Hakeem said the final decision will be taken after another round of talks with other regional leaders.

Election manifesto

Opposition and United National Party (UNP) leader Wickramasinghe's election manifesto is one of the major reasons for the party to support his campaign, the SLMC leader added.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, the ruling party's presidential candidate, is yet to announce his election manifesto.

The members were also in a view that, Rauff Hakeem said, a UNP-led government would have managed the aftermath of the December 26 tsunami disaster, much better than the current government.

CWC decision

A spokesman from the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC), meanwhile, told bbcsinhala.com that the party is to announce its position on Wednesday.

A senior government minister earlier admitted that PM Rajapakse has failed to gather support from the Tamil minority parties.

Post and Telecommunication minister DM Jayaratne said although the PM has already won the support of over 14 political parties, the minorities are yet to decide their stand.

PM Rajapakse and Ranil Wickramasinghe are the two main candidates in the November 17 elections.
