Tamil indifference towards Sri Lankan election reflects repeated let downs by Sinhala leaderships
[ TCNR ] [ 03:19 GMT, Nov. 9, 2005 ]

With a little over a week left before the Sri Lankan presidential election, there are clear signs that the Tamil North and East is indifferent towards the Sri Lankan election process and could boycott it. Canada-based Mr. V. Navaratnam, one of the founding fathers of the Federal Party, declared that the Tamil people have nothing to do with presidential elections. 'It is not the concern of the Tamils whether Mahinda Rajapakse or Ranil Wickramasinghe will or should win the Presidential election on November 17. All these are matters which concern only South Ceylon. Let the Sinhalese people sort it out and decide for themselves,' a 96-year-old Navaratnam said in an interview to TamilNet, an independent news site that reports to the world on Tamil affairs.

Sri Lanka peace official resigns
[ BBC ] [ 11:49 GMT, Nov. 9, 2005 ]

Sri Lanka's top official handling the peace process with the Tamil Tiger rebels has resigned. Jayanatha Dhanapala said his decision would allow a new president to appoint his own official but gave no other details for his resignation. The fate of the three-year-old truce between the government and the rebels will be a key issue in the 17 November presidential election. Peace talks between the two sides have been on hold since April 2003. President Chandrika Kumaratunga has accepted Mr Dhanapala's resignation. She did not name a replacement head of the Secretariat for Co-ordinating the Peace Process.

China Helping Rajapakse's Presidential Campaign!
"Wimal Weerawansa came to meet Samaraweera and said that if we have some problem with our campaign, we could get Rs. 300 million from the Chinese Communist Party through the Chinese Embassy here. The JVP has made a decision as a party to take the money and if we want it for the Prime Minister's campaign they are ready to give it." - Sunday Leader ( November 6, 2005)
