Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka took oaths as the new Prime Minister of the cabinet of President Mahinda Rajapaksa November 21, Monday. The 18th Prime Minister of independent Sri Lanka Mr. Wickramanayaka held the same position in the former cabinet of the outgoing President Chandrika Kumaratunga. Though the former President's brother , Anura Bandaranaike, was the party's nominee for the post at the time Rajapaksa received nominations to be the Presidential candidate of the same party Anura's and Mahinda's relationship became very sour during the Presidential election campaign. Long before the elections , it was predicted, that Bandaranaike would lose the confidence of Rajapaksa, when he was issuing statements embarrassing Rajapaksa's closely fought election campaign. The anger against him in the Rajapaksa camp reached its climax when he urged the then Prime Minister not to shun an unprecedented live political debate with Rival Ranil Wickremesinghe. Then for a prolonged period of time he left the campaign and went to Dhaka to take part in the SAARC conference with his sister President Kumaratunga.

Sri Lankan rebels rebuff new president's call for peace talks

The Tamil Tigers rebel group rebuffed new Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse's calls for peace talks, saying Sunday the hard-line leader does not understand their aspirations for a separate state on the Indian Ocean island. After taking office Saturday, Rajapakse ruled out the rebels' demand for greater control over Tamil affairs, saying he would never let Sri Lanka be divided. But he pledged not to return the country to war and said he would initiate a new round of talks with the rebels. Rajapakse on Monday swore in a hardliner as prime minister, who in the past has pushed for strong-arm tactics to end the civil war. The ceremony marked the start of 72-year-old Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka's third stint as premier.
