Sri Lanka President invites all parties to reach consensus on peace talks
New President Mahinda Rajapaksa today invited all political parties to come to a common position in order to revive the stalled peace talks with the LTTE immediately.
Dr. Gooneratne named as Sri Lanka's Peace Head
Deputy Secretary General of the Sri Lankan Government's Peace Secretariat, former diplomat Dr. John Gooneratne, has been appointed as the Acting Head of the Secretariat.
Cabinet spokesperson Nimal Siripala de Silva said President Mahinda Rajapaksa has made this appointment. He also said the former head of the Peace Secretariat, Jayantha Dhanapala, will continue as the advisor to the Sri Lankan peace process.
UNP leader says Sri Lanka election was not free or fair, expresses fear of poor international support
Main opposition UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today said the recently concluded presidential election cannot be considered free or fair and Sri Lanka will find it difficult to obtain cooperation from the international community. Issuing a special statement to the electronic media, the UNP leader said, Electors in the North-East Provinces and in the South were unable to cast their vote freely, independently and without hindrance. A large number of electors in the South found they had lost their franchise as their names were stuck off the voting lists. Voters in the North and East were unable to participate due to threats and intimidation.
