One dead, nearly thousand escape during clash at Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center

June 29, Colombo: One inmate has died and nearly thousand inmates have escaped during a clash between inmates of the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center for drug addicts in Welikanda today, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

According to reports, the detainees have broken the security fence of the rehabilitation center and escaped at around 8.00 am today during an incident following the death of an inmate.

258 detainees escaped from Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center captured

June 30, Colombo: The Director General of Rehabilitation, Major General Dharshana Hettiarachchi said 258 detainees who escaped from the Welikanda Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center have been re-arrested.

He also requested the public to inform the nearest police station if they have any information about the other detainees who have escaped from the center early this morning (29).

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has decided to investigate the recent unrest at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, in Polonnaruwa.

HRCSL Chairperson Supreme Court Judge (Retired) Rohini Marasinghe said a team was dispatched to the site and based on the findings of the team, and independent investigation will be carried out
