President Mahinda Rajapaksa has stopped the import of luxury vehicles for MPs and ministers with immediate effect.

President Rajapaksa has told Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara that all imported vehicles should cost under Rs. 4 million.

If that amount is exceeded, the relevant MP or minister should take the Presidents approval, Treasury sources said.

It is reported that Deputy Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa has ordered a Rs. 140 million vehicle for himself and this news was exposed by JVP MP Nandana Gunathilake in Parliament.

Reacting to the JVP MPs comment, the Presidential Secretariat said Treasury officials stopped the order immediately after President Rajapaksa got involved.
