The government has cancelled the construction of the Beliatta- Kataragama stretch of the Matara-Kataragama railway line via Hambantota and in favour of a new rail track between the Kurunegala and Habarana under the ‘Polonnaru Udanaya’ project.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva said that Kurunegala–Habarana rail track would be constructed as a priority project via Dambulla and Galewela while Chief Technical Officer of the Matara–Kataragama railway project Y. K. Samarajeewa said Beliatta–Kataragama stretch had been stopped for now.
The Matara-Kataragama railway extension project commenced under the former government which had evinced a keen interest in developing Hambantota, which is the former President’s home district.
