Tue, May 12, 2015, 10:40 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. May 12, Colombo: A report prepared on an investigation into the alleged deforestation of Sri Lanka's famous Wilpattu National Park has been handed in to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Monday.
Secretary to the Ministry of Irrigation, Mahaweli and Environment Nihal Rupasinghe said that the report relating to the special investigation on the Wilpattu incident was handed over to the President. The report was prepared after a tour of inspection in the area, he said.
The Secretary said that the special investigation and the survey relating to the alleged clearance of forest areas of Wilpattu were carried out on the instructions of the President.

Minister asserts there are no settlers in Sri Lanka's reserved forest

Wed, May 13, 2015, 11:08 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. May 13, Colombo: Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka has asserted that there are no settlers in Wilpattu Reserved Forest in the Northern Province.
During a press conference held at the Ministry of Power and Energy on Monday, Minister Ranawaka said however, the people are allowed to settle outside Wilpattu jungles with permissions.
"According to the information available to me, there are no settlers within Wilpattu Jungle Reserves and are settlers in the surrounding jungles who are permitted and they are not illegal," he said.

The Court of Appeal yesterday issued notices on eight respondents, including Minister Rishad Badiudeen when the petition filed by the Parisarika Yukthi Kendraya against the illegal de - forestation of resettlement in the Wilpattu Reserve was taken up for hearing yesterday.

'Wilpattu forest cleared by State Timber Corp, not by Muslim IDPs' - environmentalist

Addressing a discussion forum on Wilpattu at Ramada Hotel on Thursday with the participation of Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen, Thilak Kariyawasam, President of Lanka Organic Agriculture Movement said the trees in the Wilpattu National Forest were removed not by Muslims but by State Timber Corporation, and the Muslims were accused on deforestation.

Mar 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen says the clearing of the forests surrounding the Wilpattu sanctuary were cleared not by Muslim IDPs nor people but by state authorities with the prior approval of the government.
Speaking to BBC Sandeshaya program in London Sunday, Minister Bathiudeen said the deforestation activities in Wilpattu, was carried out by the government not the people.
"I can vow, with responsibility, that none of these IDP people are responsible for this destruction. It is the government using state resources, cleared the forests," said Minister Bathiudeen.
Minister Bathiudeen was meeting the BBS Sandeshaya team on the sidelines of his visit to the inaugural Commonwealth Trade Ministers' Meeting held on 9-10 March at Lancaster House, London.

Court rules deforestation of Kallaru forest near Wilpattu and settlement illegal

MP Rishad Bathiudeen ordered to reforest the cleared area at his own expense

The Court of Appeal Monday ruled that clearing the Kallaru reserve forest near the Wilpattu forest reserve and constructing settlements in the cleared area is illegal.
The Court of Appeal today pronounced the verdict after hearing a petition filed by the Center for Environmental Justice (CEJ).
The Court of Appeal two-judge-bench comprising Justice Janak de Silva and Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne made this ruling in pursuant to a writ petition filed by Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ).
