Two dead, two missing in landslides in Kegalle and Kurunegala, death toll increases to 20 due to adverse weather

Two persons have been killed and two others are missing after landslides hit two houses in Kurunegala and Kegalle, Disaster Management Center (DMC) said.

A father and son have gone missing after a mound of earth collapsed on a house in the Dewalegama area in Pussella, Kegalle. The mother has been rescued and hospitalized, according to the District Disaster Management Unit. Army troops and relief teams are conducting search operations to find the missing.

Inclement weather in Sri Lanka claims 25 lives, over 222,000 affected

Flooding and landslides fueled by the torrential rains over the past few days have claimed 25 lives in Sri Lanka with one person missing.

According to the latest report of the Disaster Management Center (DMC), 222,590 people of 63,317 families have been affected by the adverse weather conditions that have affected 126 Divisional Secretariat Divisions in 17 districts of the country.

Over 600 schools island wide closed due to adverse weather

Around 630 schools island wide have to be closed due to the adverse weather prevailing in the country, according to authorities.

Provincial Director of Education Jayalath Dissanayake said 444 schools in the Jaffna District, 37 schools in the Puttalam Education Zone in the North Western Province and 11 schools each in the Chilaw and Giriulla Zones had to be closed.
