COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that a Presidential Election will take place next year, followed by the Parliamentary, and Provincial Council elections.

He made these comments during a discussion with a diverse delegation representing the Global Tamil Forum (GTF) and esteemed Buddhist monks who represented the Sangha Forum for a Better Sri Lanka.

The President said that after the elections are held, constitutional amendments or the drafting of a new constitution can take place.

The Joint Himalayan Declaration, a collaborative effort between the Global Tamil Forum and the Buddhist delegation, advocating for a pluralistic Sri Lanka that actively promotes the well-being of all its communities, was formally presented to the President.

The Joint Himalayan Declaration was prepared by the Global Tamil Forum (GTF) and esteemed Buddhist monks who represented the Sangha Forum for a Better Sri Lanka following extensive discussions.

It contains six key points that aim to promote reconciliation and coexistence among communities, as well as the promotion of social welfare and development.

Following the presentation, the Buddhist monks who represented the Sangha Forum for a Better Sri Lanka noted that the Joint Himalayan Declaration will be discussed with the Mahanayake Theros of the Three Main Sects, as well as other religious leaders in the country.

However, the SLPP is under compulsion to take such drastic action since quite a number of its MPs who are uncertain about re-election are not prepared to go for a general election mid -term. In the case of serving full term in the House, they will at least be entitled to pension benefits.
