A convicted British paedophile has surrendered to the police in the capital, Colombo, Sri Lanka's Child Protection Authority (CPA) said.
Dr. Hiranthi Wijemanna, head of CPA, told BBC Sandeshaya that the authorities were searching for the whereabouts of Michael Smith for allegedly sexually abusing several Sri Lankan children.

The child protection officers have launched a man hunt after receiving information from the British officials.

Dr. Wijemanna said the man, who had allegedly abused children in Negombo and Mannar, is to be produced before courts on Thursday.

Three officers from the CPA were earlier detained in Mannar by the Tamil Tigers.

Child Protection Authority (CPA) said that six police officers have gone to rebel-held area near Mannar in search of the suspected paedophile.

The authorities have sought international assistance for the release of the officers.
