Of the stories that arose after the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, what happened in the port city of Galle on Sri Lanka's south-west coast was among the most bizarre.
Such was the loss of life on the Indian Ocean rim and were the tales of survival, that lesser events were overlooked.
Galle had much to thank its Portuguese and Dutch traders and settlers for. The ramparts of the fort, which surrounds the ancient part of the city, protected the buildings and its inhabitants from the worst of the rising ocean.
Just to the north, the cricket ground, bus station and market areas were swamped and many people swept to their deaths.
One group, little known at the time, was the marine archaeologists who had been exploring the port's rich history.
They had spent the 90s cataloguing and bringing to the surface artefacts from more than 20 ships sunk in the harbour and offshore.
