COLOMBO (News 1st); Hindus around the world mark Maha Shivaratri today (08), a Hindu festival celebrated annually in reverence of the god Shiva.
Mahashivaratri Festival or ‘The Night of Shiva’ is celebrated with devotion and religious fervor in honor of Lord Shiva, one of the deities of Hindu Trinity.
Shivaratri falls on the moonless 14th night of the new moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna.
Celebrating the festival of Shivaratri devotees observe a day and night fast and perform ritual worship of Shiva Lingam to appease Lord Shiva.
Shivaratri is celebrated during the night by keeping a "jaagaran" - a night-long vigil as it is believed that Lord Shiva saved the universe from darkness and ignorance.
This day is also believed to be the day that Shiva was married to the Goddess Parvati.
