[h=3]Historic Galle Fort Neglected[/h]
State officials serving in the Galle Fort allege that responsible State institutions are not doing their administrative duties properly in connection with the lands and buildings in the beautiful Galle Fort, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, representing a number of historic eras.They also pointed out that as a result of brokers getting involved in selling off lands in the Galle Fort at massive prices to foreigners, lands there, to a large extent, have fallen into the hands of foreign persons. It is said that currently brokers estimate the cost of a perch of land in the Galle Fort at more than Rs 15 to 20 million.

It was revealed in Ceylon Today’s tour of the Galle Fort that on the other hand, foreigners have been inconvenienced due to purchasing lands at exorbitant prices, through brokers, who have hidden the fact that the Department of Archaeology or the Urban Development Authority (UDA) had filed Court cases in connection with certain properties.

They also said that meanwhile, the Archaeological Department and the UDA are maintaining silence regarding certain constructions and renovations which are being carried out by private house owners as well as businessmen against Archaeological Acts and Orders. For example, what we saw, during our tour of the Galle Fort, was how a partition had been constructed very recently within an office belonging to the Road Development Authority (RDA) which is being maintained in one of the ancient buildings belonging to the Dutch era. When we inquired regarding this, a top official of the Southern Province UDA said that they were unaware of such a thing.
