Trinity College , Kandy dates its continuous existence from 1872, when the Kandy Collegiate School , which had closed down in 1863, was reopened. It was initiated by the Church Missionary Society and takes its name from the school which its founder, the Rev. J. Ireland Jones, attended: Trinity College , Dublin . The original purpose of Trinity was to inculcate the values of Christian Character amongst the students of Kandy and groom Christian Boys for service and leadership in the country.

While events over the past 134 years have forced an alteration of the College's aims, it remains one of the foremost educational institutions in the country, offering students a complete and multi-faceted education that would ensure them a standing in whatever profession they choose to follow, while remaining true to its Christian roots.
