Luxury bus service on Expressway from January

All measures are in place to commence a luxury bus service on the Southern Expressway from mid January, Expressway director (operations) B D K Bandara told the Daily News yesterday. This was decided at a meeting between the Sri Lanka Transport Commission and the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).

The National Transport Commission will provide two buses while the SLTB will provide four buses."When passenger demand increases more buses will be provided. Buses will ply from Kottawa to Galle and Galle to Kottawa. The buses will travel twice a day. It will also be increased according to public demand," Bandara added.

Sri Lanka to begin public passenger services on expressway in January

Sri Lankan highway authorities are ready to deploy passenger transport buses on its first expressway from January 01.
State-owned Sri Lanka Transport Board as well as two private companies from Anuradhapura and Galle are to deploy buses on the expressway.
Air-conditioned 42-seater private buses with seat belts are to charge Rs. 400 per one way journey between Colombo and Galle.
Sri Lanka Transport Board has also imported two luxury buses for the operations in the expressway. They are to start journey from Maharagama depot.
These express intercity buses will not stop at interchanges.
An official said that an alarm bell is installed in buses to stop the drivers passing the maximum speed limit of 100 kmph.
A special training was held yesterday in the expressway for the drivers of these buses.

Super luxury bus service to expand

The National Transport Commission (NTC) is to introduce a super luxury bus service to five more routes with effect from March 2013.

NTC Chairman, Roshan Gunawardane, said new standards will also be introduced to the luxury bus services, simultaneously, in a bid to improve the quality of the transport service.

He said the decisions were taken during a discussion held between the Minister of Private Transport Services, C.B. Ratnayake, inter-provincial bus owners and NTC officials.

"The super luxury bus service will be ply between Colombo-Kataragama, Colombo-Anuradhapura, Colombo-Nuwara Eliya, Colombo-Vauniya and Colombo-Polonnaruwa," he said.

At present, super luxury bus services ply on 10 routes including Galle-Maharagama (on the Southern Expressway), Jaffna-Colombo, Trincomalee-Colombo, Batticaloa-Colombo, Point Pedro-Colombo, Akkaraipattu-Colombo and Badulla-Colombo.
