Sinhalese Intransigence
[ TamilCanadian ] [ 02:59 GMT, Dec. 16, 2005 ]

We Tamils are neither fully caged nor totally free from Sinhalese interference and intrusion into our affairs Mr H.L De Silva acknowledges that Federalism can only succeed where the rival parties trust each other, which neither side does in Sri Lanka.. Our rivalries and suspicions of each others motives have existed from time immemorial, and are not likely to fade away. Yet, Mr De Silva has the audacity to suggest that as long as the Tamils remain obstreperous, all efforts at negotiations will remain frustrated. The question we have to ask him is, who is and have been in power and who have been responsible for breeding the ethnic crisis? Who then should be the party willing to make concessions, his Sinhalese governments, or we the Tamils who have been victims of their policies? How come they cannot acknowledge that their concept of unity has been on the shoals and cannot be revived.

The first of many hurdles

Optimism stemming from Rajapakse’s reversal on Norway’s role as facilitator is untenable. Sri Lanka’s new President last week made the first of what is hopefully a series of policy reversals necessary to shift his administration away from the hardline positions on the peace process he adopted during the November presidential polls and towards a practical peace process. Mahinda Rajapakse invited the Royal Norwegian government to resume its crucial role as facilitators in talks to end Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict. Interestingly, his Sinhala nationalist allies, the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) and, more importantly, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) did not protest, instead maintaining a studied silence over the move which reneges on key undertakings in the pre-election pacts he signed with both parties.
