Too Much Talk S.Lanka security tight ahead of slain MP's funeral
[ Reuters ] [ 04:00 GMT, Dec. 29, 2005 ]

Troops beefed up security in Sri Lanka's restive east on Thursday ahead of the funeral of a pro-rebel MP gunned down at Christmas mass, as an escalating rash of attacks stokes fears of a return to civil war. Sporadic attacks continued overnight near rebel-held territory. A policeman was shot and injured while on duty in the eastern district of Batticaloa, where slain Tamil politician Joseph Pararajasingam was shot dead after taking Communion. Leaflets were scattered overnight in Batticaloa carrying a warning from a renegade rebel faction locked in a feud with the mainstream Tigers, ordering residents not to attend the funeral. "Security has been tightened. More troops and policemen are providing security," said military spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe.

Too Much Talk
[ Tamil Guardian ] [ 04:01 GMT, Dec. 29, 2005 ]

Amid seething tensions between the Tamil population and Sri Lankan security forces, the ceasefire continues to fray in a storm of landmines, grenades and gunfire. There have been clashes at sea and more extra-judicial killings on land. Amidst all these, there was a particularly vicious attack this week, the murder of Joseph Pararajasingham, MP. A veteran politician, he was associated most with his fearless championing of the human rights of his people and of the Tamil cause. As far as the Tamils are concerned, blame for his killing - like that of other sons of Batticaloa murdered this year, Kausalyan and Sivaram, - rests with the Sri Lankan state. The triggers may have been pulled by Tamil paramilitaries or intelligence agents, but it was in service of the state that the killings were executed.

[ TamilCanadian ] [ 11:20 GMT, Dec. 29, 2005 ]

The rape and murder of Tharshini is an inhuman act. 19 year old Tharshini's mutilated and lifeless body was recovered from an abandoned well in Punguduthivu located close to the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) camp insidethe high security zone which is under the control of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces (SLAF). According to postmortem examinations conducted in the Jaffna Teaching Hospital by Judicial Medical Officer Dr Balasubramaniam, she was brutally raped before being strangled to death. The report confirms the brutality of the sexual assault and rape on Tharshini":several injuries were caused by fingernails and biting had been found on several areas of her body. One of her breasts had been severely bitten." The SLN which has complete control over the islet of Punkuduthivu did not permit the local community to even conduct a decent burial for Tharshinias selected people who were to conduct last rites did not come to the site due to SLN intimidation of civilians in the area.

Mahinda Rajapaksa's military agenda commenced
[ TCHR ] [ 11:27 GMT, Dec. 29, 2005 ]

As soon as this was published, then Prime Minister Rajapaksa telephoned Pararajasingham's home in Colombo and argued with Pararajasingham demanding him to withdraw the statement made to the Daily Mirror! As a man of principle, Pararajasingham refused Rajapaksa's demand and disappointed Rajapaksa concluded his phone call saying that, 'once the presidential election is over, you will see my true colours'. This was considered by Pararajasingham as a statement having double meaning and as a threat. This telephone conversation was witnessed by Pararajasingham's wife Mrs. Sugunam Pararajasingham. Mr. Pararajasingham recorded Rajapaksa's telephone conversation with the Executives of TCHR as this was considered a serious threat. On 24 December 2005, Mr & Mrs Pararajasingham participated in the midnight Christmas Eve mass in their home town Batticaloa. When they were ready to receive Holy Communion from the Bishop of Batticaloa - Mr. Joseph Pararajasingham was shot dead by unidentified gunmen, within the Cathedral.

Hypocrisy of the West Exposed !
[ Canadian Movement For Peace With Justice ] [ 11:33 GMT, Dec. 29, 2005 ]

Oh International Community! Where is thy sense of justice and fairplay? Your ominous silence would point out that you are NOT impartial in your dealings and your scales of justice tilting in favour of the oppressor to the detriment of the long oppressed and downtrodden people of the NorthEast. Your silence, whilst emboldening the perpetrators to continue unbridled killing spree would also transform your status quo from Co-Chairs for Peace to Co-Accused in organised political murders and genocide of a nation! You, who have been mere spectators for over three decades of mass murder, rape, violence, mayhem and destruction of properties perpetrated against the people of NorthEast, are not that naïve not to realise that it was the resultant birth of the LTTE that saved them from near perpetration of Hitler's 'Final Solution' on them where again you would have simply watched it just as you watched Rwandan genocides! Perhaps, the absence of underground oil may be their misfortune in not warranting intervention by vested interests!

MOD refutes alleged travel restrictions for foreigners
[ Government of Sri Lanka ] [ 11:36 GMT, Dec. 29, 2005 ]

Ministry of Defense (MoD) drew its attention to certain media reports that attributed to travel restrictions allegedly placed on foreign nationals working for various Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the north & east of the country. MoD categorically denies having placed any such travel restrictions for foreigners who have been accredited to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and are working in the north and east in cleared or un-cleared areas. It is regretted that certain media are deliberately trying to create embarrassment by distoring and misinterpreting facts related to their travel to un-cleared areas. All those who want assistance in this connection are requested to contact the MoD for any clarifications.

Sri Lanka chief truce monitor says war could be near
[ Reuters ] [ 11:39 GMT, Dec. 29, 2005 ]

Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission head Hagrup Haukland appealed to the government and the Tamil Tiger rebels to hold peace talks. He condemned a string of attacks that culminated in two mine blasts that killed 25 military personnel in the past week. "If this trend of violence is allowed to continue, war may not be far away," Haukland said in a statement. "It is now imperative that the parties join hands to arrest the violence prevailing in the north and east." "However, there is a way forward: Direct dialogue," he added. The government and the Tigers are poles apart over the rebels' demands for wide political powers in the north and east, where they want to build a homeland for ethnic Tamils. Many Tamils feel sidelined economically by the island's majority Sinhalese who dominate the south and the island's politics and want to control their own destiny.

Fear and blame at funeral of slain Sri Lankan MP
[ Reuters ] [ 11:46 GMT, Dec. 29, 2005 ]

The government blames Tamil Tiger rebels for a string of attacks on soldiers that have stretched a 2002 truce to breaking point. But supporters of Joseph Pararajasingam, a member of parliament for Tamil National Alliance -- the Tigers' political proxies -- said they believe the army or government-backed paramilitaries gunned him down at a Christmas mass."By cutting him off, they thought they could cut off the Tamil peoples' cries. My father has always been a voice for the LTTE and the Tamil people," he said, using the acronym for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam.Pararajasingam's family blamed his killing on the Karuna faction, a breakaway group from the LTTE, that the rebels say is backed by the government and international truce monitors say the army at least turns a blind eye to.

[ IANS ] [ 12:00 GMT, Dec. 29, 2005 ]

Passions are again running high in Tamil Nadu over Sri Lanka, with leading political parties opposing a visit - now cancelled - to the state by President Mahinda Rajapakse.Tamil Nadu parties, including members of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), are unhappy with Rajapakse's policies towards the country's peace process as well as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). PMK leader S. Ramadoss has blamed Rajapakse for the "failure" of the peace talks between the LTTE and Colombo. "Whenever there is a crisis, (Sri) Lankan presidents rush to India" to create an impression that New Delhi is supporting their stand, he said in a statement.Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha has politely declined to meet Rajapakse, who had wanted to go to Chennai on his way home after ending official talks here.
