* Sri Lanka government considering a referendum

Marxist JVP and the monk party JHU are against a federal system.
Apr 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka government is considering a referendum to get a mandate to proceed with the peace process. President Mahinda Rajapaksa will take a decision soon on this proposal which has been put forward by the President's advisers.
The advisers have pointed out to the President that the best way to get rid of the stagnation of the peace process is to hold a referendum. According to the constitution of Sri Lanka the President has powers to hold referendums for the issues which have national importance.
Sinhala nationalist People's Liberation Front (JVP) and the monk party National Heritage (JHU) which lost in the recently held local governmental elections have strengthened the campaigns against the peace process and they have vowed to agitate till the Norwegians who facilitate the peace process are expelled from Sri Lanka.
Many parties have highlighted a federal system to replace the current unitary state as a solution to the ethnic problem of Sri Lanka. But the Marxist JVP and the monk party JHU are against a federal system.
