Suicide attack in Sri Lanka kills five, wounds several including Army commander

Army Commander’s situation is serious and doctors have done two separate operations within an hour.
Apr 25, Colombo: Five people including two soldiers were killed and 15 others were injured in a suicide attack when a suspected female LTTE rebel rift off a bomb this afternoon in the high security zone inside the Army headquarters, eye witnesses said.

“Army Commander Sarath Fonseka and Chief of Staff Nanda Mallawarachchi were among the injured,” National Hospital sources said. It is learnt that Army Commander’s situation is serious and doctors have done two separate operations within an hour.

"A suicide LTTE female jumped in to Army Commander’s official vehicle when he traveled to his office for the lunch,” Defense Ministry sources told ColomboPage.

“The LTTE has targeted the Army Commander,” sources added.

Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka has been appointed the Commander of the Army in Sri Lanka effective from 6th December 2005. “Widely admired as one of the great battle-hardened warriors of our times, Lieutenant General G. S. C Fonseka has served largely as an illustrious infantry soldier in the northern theatre of war during his exemplary career, particularly at the peak of Tamil Tiger terrorism,” a release from the Army Headquarters said.

Female Bomber Kills 8 in Sri Lanka


COLOMBO, Sri Lanka Apr 25, 2006 (AP)— A female suicide bomber disguised to look pregnant blew herself up near a car carrying Sri Lanka's top general, killing eight people in a brazen attack on the heavily fortified grounds of the country's army headquarters.

The general's driver and escort were killed but the target, Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka, escaped with serious injuries, the military said. He was among more than two dozen people wounded in the attack, including a number of civilians. It was not clear if any other top Sri Lankan military officials were hurt.
