Yal Devi train in Jaffna after 24 year gap

The ‘Yal Devi’ express train reached the Jaffna railway station as part of a test run today with railway operations between Jaffna and Colombo set to resume next month after 24 years.
Since 1990, the ‘Yal Devi’ service had to terminate at intermediate stations, due to the war between the LTTE and the army.
The ‘Yal Devi’ had been operating till Kilinochchi since last year and will resume its services to Jaffna once the railway station damaged during the war is open next month with the completion of the reconstruction work.
Test runs along the new Colombo – Jaffna railway track using other trains have been conducted over the past few days.
Minister Douglas Devananda, Northern Province Governor G.A. Chandrasiri and other officials were at hand today to witness the arrival of the train. (Colombo Gazette)

The one-time popular and well patronized Yarl Devi express train after 24 years made its maiden trip today from Palai to Jaffna on the recently restored Northern railway line.

The train left Palai at 10.30 a.m. and arrived at Jaffna at 11.30 a.m. passing four main railway stations and six train halts. Minister Douglas Devenanda and Northern Province Governor G.A. Chandrasiri joined the test run.

The train service along the northern line was restricted to Vavuniya after the Yarl Devi express train came under LTTE attack in 1990. However the train service was resumed in stages with the Government repairing and renovating the track.

A Senior Railways Department Official said the train service to Jaffna would resume next month.

Ab nächsten Monat wird der Zugservice wieder aufgenommen.

He said the Jaffna railway station was reconstructed at a cost of Rs.150 million and that the project included a communication system linked to the Colombo control room. (By Romesh Madusanaka and Pushpa Weerasekara)

The Jaffna Railway Station re-construction is currently being given the final touches to be declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, on 13 October.

Der rekonstruierte Bahnhof in Jaffna erhält seinen Feinschliff um am 13. Oktober (Montag übernächste Woche) vom Präsident Mahinda Rajapaksa eröffnet zu werden.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will travel from Palai Railway Station to Jaffna by train to officially resume the railway link between Jaffna and Colombo on 13 October.

Präsident Mahinda Rajapaksa wird am 13. Oktober per Zug vom Bahnhof Palai nach Jaffna reisen um offiziell die Eisenbahnverbindung zwischen Jaffna und Colombo wieder aufzunehmen.

Governor of Northern Province GA Chandrasiri paid an inspection visit to Jaffna Railway Station on 02nd October 2014 and observed the renovation works.

Der Gouverneur der Nordprovinz GA Chandrasiri unternahm am 02. Oktober 2014 einen Inspektionsbesuch zum Bahnhof in Jaffna und besichtigte die Rekonstruktionsarbeiten.

It should be noted that Jaffna Railway Station will be ceremonially opened by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 13th October 2014.

Am 13. Oktober 2014 wird der Bahnhof in Jaffna durch den Präsidenten Mahinda Rajapaksa eröffnet.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa flagged off the train at the auspicious time of 9:30 a.m. from Palai station and rode the train to Jaffna as a special passenger.
The President declared open the newly constructed train stations in between Palai and Jaffna at Chavakachcheri, Nawakkuli and Kodikamam and the Jaffna Railway Station at the end of the journey.

Nach Navatkuli und der neuen Eisenbahnbrücke passiert der Zug noch zwei Haltepunkte und ist dann in Jaffna (Hauptbahnhof?).

Vor etwa zwei Monaten (14.08.14) stand ich an dem im Video gezeigtem Bahnübergang. Es gab nichts zu feiern und außer mir hat sich niemand für die Eisenbahn interessiert.

Ich finde die Anbindung wirklich gut, auch wenn die Baukosten Horror sein sollen.

Übrigens habe ich nirgends in Jaffna nen Bahnhof gesehen. Ist der komplett neu entstanden ? Und, die letzte Frage wäre nach der Reisedauer Colombo -> Jaffna.

Der Bahnhof (Hauptbahnhof) befindet sich kurz hinter dem Greengrass Hotel.

Der Bahnhof wurde im Krieg teilweise zerstört und wurde jetzt rekonstruiert.
Auf dem Bahnsteig gegenüber wurde ein weiteres Gebäude neu errichtet.

Colombo Palai nach Fahrplan + eine Stunde mehr (geschätzt)

Die Anbindung finde ich SEHR GUT. Seit 4 Jahren habe ich schon zwei Sonderfahrkarten Colombo Jaffna. Die gab es zu Finanzierung der Rekonstruktion der Eisenbahnlinie.

8 Stunden sind für die Entfernung schon fast OK. Man bekam bereits bis Vavuniya einiges vom Land zu sehen, wenn man den Zug nutzte.

Ich hab da aber von 1987 etwas passendes zum Thema gefunden.

Januar/Februar dann mit dem Zug nach Jaffna ( wenn man überhaupt kann ).
